We had a GREAT turn out at the first Zoomerangs East practice last Sunday! Approximately 70 young runners came out to strut their stuff on the track. Over 130 miles were run by the kids combined! The kids earned a popsicle stick for each lap they ran and at the end of practice they traded in their popsicle sticks for stickers and gummy worms which were handed out by our AWESOME volunteers!
Zoomerangs starts off with a bang!

Pay it Forward & Feel the Reward: Help Our Beginners!
Our 5K Beginner Training Group program begins on Saturday, April 28th and we are looking for volunteers.
I can only speak for myself and what other coaches have told me, but I can honestly say what a rewarding experience it is to help our 5K Beginner Training Group participants. It only takes a small about of time to make a BIG difference.

Strong Finish for the GRR Beginner 5K Group!
After nine weeks of training, our beginner group showed up to accomplish their goal and they did it!!! They finished their training strong. Each person had their personal goal for the race, went out and succeeded. This was no different from what we saw during their individual efforts throughout this training program. This group was very dedicated and motivated. CONGRATS TO ALL!!!

Erik’s Spring Message
Happy Spring to ALL GRR Members,
I think spring is finally and permanently here. We can put away those tights and gloves and get out the warm weather gear. Summer is creeping up fast……and for those that participated in Boston on Monday; they may argue it is already here. Congratulations to all that braved the HOT temperatures and completed the race. Although the times were a bit slower than you may have strived for, it is a great accomplishment that you finished under the extreme heat…..AND let’s not forget that you were there in the first place because you earned it. GREAT JOB and a great showing of GRR.
Run Diva Run Success
Also during this past weekend, GRR held its 2nd annual Run Diva Run. It was a great race, great weather and went off without a hitch. This year we had over 230 paid runners including our beginners that all finished with a smile. It was awesome to see their happiness. I think quite a few of them may not only have joined GRR but may have gotten the “running bug” and we may see some of them doing their 1st 10K or half marathons soon.
With this great success, GRR was able to donate $1250 to the Team Towanda Foundation. What a great start to our year of donations.
THANK YOU to the entire race committee. You guys did a fantastic job. I know a lot of work went into preparing for it and it showed. Also, a big thanks to all our volunteers who did a great job with helping with the course management, set up and clean up. These races would not be possible without all our members and family members helping and participating. Our newly formed volunteer committee did a fantastic job!!! Thanks again for all your help and efforts. Let’s hope this race keeps growing each year as it is for a great cause. They were very appreciative of the donation.
Zoomerangs
We are now gearing up for our first Zoomerangs program. It starts next week!!! So spread the word, sign up your kids and volunteer if you have the time. All the kids will be very happy. Let’s face it….these kids are the future of running and possibly future GRR members. Showing kids now that running, fitness and health can be fun helps them spread the word by example and promote a healthy lifestyle and fitness to the other youth. If you can help or have any questions, please contact Ray Long, Kate Rich or myself at zoomerangs@glastonburyriverrunners.com.
New Beginners Group Starting
Lastly, next week also starts a new beginner 5K group for GRR. We already have 15-20 pre-registered. This group was a great success this last time. Many signed up as new GRR members and want to keep running. They are also volunteering to help with the next new group.
If you can spare a little time, please contact Dawn at beginners@glastonburyriverrunners.com to volunteer to help. She needs volunteers and the runners really appreciate us coming out to help. Hearing their stories and seeing their joy reminds us all of the simple joy of running and what we want GRR to stand for.
Thanks again to everyone and see you all on the roads!!!
DON’T FORGET TO GET YOUR HATS OR VISORS. SHIRTS WILL BE COMING SOON!!!

We Survived Boston Marathon 2012
Congratulations to the GRR team who survived the Boston Marathon 2012 on Monday, April 16th: Kevin Rice, Suresh Jatti, Susan Sacco, Tricia King, Jorge Kuljis, Claudia Kefor, Mary Daley, Sandy Webb-Monaco, Brett Roberson, Amira Lerario, Monica Guy.
Sweltering heat led to many runners zonking out on the way but our members all pushed through to the finishing line.
Suresh Jatti and Kevin Rice led the pack with 3:23:19 and 3:38:46 respectively and still managed to look good at the end.
For full race results search the Boston Marathon results page – but don’t expect any PRs!

Zoomerangs starts this Sunday!!
Our first Zoomerangs practice is this Sunday, April 22 at 3:30pm – though, we ask that you arrive between 2:30-3:15pm to pick-up your kids’ t-shirt and give them time to customize it with markers that we provide. We like for the kids to write their names on the front of their shirts so we can cheer them by name. We will also give them a Team Number to put on their sleeve. This number will correspond to the coach that they will check in with at the beginning of each practice.
