The Glastonbury River Runners are offering another FREE nine-week training program to accomplish your goal of completing a 5K race. The program begins Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at Riverfront Park at 8:30 AM and ends with the GRR’s own NRG Energy Firecracker 5K on Sunday, July 1st, 2012.

Let us help you reach your goal of running a 5K (3.1 mile) race. We are here to offer you group support, motivation and fun along the way! Not only will you complete your goal but you will also meet some fantastic running partners that can last beyond race day.

Training sessions

  • First session: Saturday, April 28, 2012 @ 8:30 AM.
  • We will meet as a group TWO times a week, Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • Saturday sessions begin at 8:30 AM at Riverfront Park on Welles Street in Glastonbury, CT.
  • Tuesday sessions begin at 6:00 PM at Rotary Field on Olde Stage Road.

You are welcome to join us for as many sessions as you would like. We encourage you to join the group sessions as much as possible. However, we do realize that conflicts may occur. If you miss a particular session, we suggest you do that session’s training on your own at a more convenient time.

Course goal

To complete a 5K at your own pace. Our training program will lead you up to GRR’s NRG Energy Firecracker 5K race on Sunday, July 1, 2012.

What to expect

Every week we will have training goals with a specific distance. We will repeat timed jog/walk intervals until that distance is covered. For example, for the first session we will repeat one minute jog/one minute walk intervals for 1.25 miles. Each week we will increase the distance and the jog intervals.

Our sessions will begin with warm ups and end with cool downs. We will have occasional guest speakers to talk to you about various running topics.

There will be multiple volunteer coaches to match the different speeds of group members. Each person is different. This training is about YOU accomplishing YOUR goal of running a 5K at YOUR own pace.

If you’re reading this after April 28th but still want to join, feel free to contact us. We can let you know our current weekly training goal. If you feel that is obtainable for you then we welcome you to join us. Otherwise, we will have another free training session beginning September 8th.
